2010 Buell Ulysses

2010 Buell Ulysses

  1. Inmates:
I am returning to riding after a lengthy family-forced hiatus. A pal recommended ADV, and now I'm hooked. I am a twin fan, with a special place in ,my heart for the v-twin. My experience has been primarily with straight road bikes, but the more time I spend lurking on ADV the more I find the flexibility and long-range capabilities of ADV bikes compelling.

I'm a short dude, 5'9" with 29-30" inseam at best. I know that puts some ADV bikes in the step ladder and Gene Simmons' (Kiss) boots category to play. Does anyone similarly vertically challenged have experience with the Buell Ulysses XB12XT? It looks like it has a seat height that is doable and is pretty narrow. Any thoughts out there?

  2. I'm almost exactly your size. I bought a new XB12X in 2007, the year before the XT was introduced. I had to be careful riding it due to the height, but it was completely manageable. I even did quite a bit of 2-up riding, but it could be a handful sometimes.

Last year I found a guy who wanted to swap his XT suspension for X suspension, so we worked out a swap. I like the bike even better with the change. It's easier to manage and it handles a little better in the twisties.

The XT was introduced in 2008, the same year they added the strengthened crankshaft and improved oiling system, so they're among the best XB's. Try one, you'll like it.

  3. Thanks for the feedback Hughlysses (great user name, BTW) They Ulysses seems to be calling to me!
  4. I test rode the Uly, was a tad high. But, my 5'08", 200+lbs. sagged the suspension enough to be doable.
I loved the looks of the XT and was seriously buying a new one til HD pulled the plug.
I missed out on a sweet clean used one a couple of years later. I wish I'd got a blue one.

  5. They are lovely! Thanks for the feedback Oilhead
  6. I owned an older Tube frame Buell and still have fond memories... The Ullysses XT for me was one of those wish I could have bikes. I've never seen one for sale in my neck of the woods but If I do... I may have to do some begging...

My best friend and riding partner bought a left over just like the one above. He's 5'10, long torso so slightly shorter inseam. Commutes every day he can on it(50 miles round) and tours all over with it. Has over 90 thou on it and still loves it. Only a couple issues so far. Very thankful there is a good Buell supporting H.D. dealer not too far away.
  8. That's really helpful insight. Thanks! The fact that HD is servicing them, and that they aren't complete orphans is a huge plus.
  9. There's a good thread over in beasts.
I have an '06 XB12X, so no real insight on the XT. 5'10" with a 31 inch inseam. Can't flat foot it, but can get both feet on the ground.
I really like mine. Tempted to buy another one and just stock it away for when the current one is all used up.
  10. Thanks for the heads up on the other thread. I'll check that out. Stockpiling sounds like it might be a good idea. I don;t have any idea what the production run, but obviously, they are already pretty hard to find.
  11. Prob one of the most fun bikes i've owned. still, the begining of the end came when i lost rear wheel bearings at 80mph. Was a known prob and fixed under warranty, but left me shook up a bit.
  12. Probably my most fav bike in my lineup, I ride it 2 up often and it never has given me a single issue. I would get 08 or newer and upgrade to a 2010 rear wheel for the 3rd bearing upgrade. I threw on some exhaust and farkled the hell out of it for ADV and ride it all the time.
  13. +1 on the three bearing rear wheel. I believe these are still available new through HD.

    PDTX Been here awhile

I'm the guy selling the XT Florida Lime mentioned. I don't know the stock seat height. But the previous owner of my XT had a 29 inch inseam. After having it lowered, he still could not 100% flat foot, but was very close. I found what he wrote me when we were exchanging emails:It is not as tall as other bikes, but the seat is wide and comfy. That may create some issues.

Find a way to come visit Padre Island and while here, test ride my Uly. :deal

My friend did the rear wheel and axle upgrade after the outer bearing races where slipping in the wheel. He knew the issue and would pull and repack probably twice as often as needed. The '10 upgrade definitely fixes it.

Also, the wheel/ axle is still available...
  17. Anything I have needed for my XB1200R I have found in just an hour or so and had it in my shop in a week. Seems to be plenty of parts new and a lot of used available as well.

I was stockpiling a few parts that I thought may be a problem but , really, everything is right there on eBay or the forums and these bikes are so easy to service you can be your own mechanic
if you have any aptitude at all and you don't even have to have metric tools in most instances. As Mr Twister noted, wheels? very common and easy to find. Body work the same thing, windshields, brakes, belts, fans all you could want just a few clicks away.

The only part I was concerned about was the XB series front motor mount. I found one after a couple of weeks wait and have it on the shelf, mine is fine but that mount may be the tough one for a while until someone starts building it again, it is supposed to be this year sometime.

Oh yeah, Hughlysses and Vic Rattlehead are like Buell Gods and full of good ideas and feedback

  18. and checknout Bad Weather Bikers for tons of info and good people.

  19. There's also a Buell master tech on buellxb.com named Lunaticfringe. If it has to do with Buell, he knows the answer.

I've owned an 03 XB9R for almost 10 years. It doesn't have huge mileage, but the couple things I've had to fix have always been cheap and easy.
