2007 Harley Sportster 1200r

  1. So I am looking maybe to pull the trigger on one of these. 2008 (actaully not a 2007) with 8,000 miles from a dealer. Not a Harley Dealer, but a good one with many used Harleys for sale. The 2007 Sportster/Roadster is basically a 1200 sportster with bigger tank and a blacked out motor. They no longer make this particular model.
2007 it seems was the first year for 1200 sportster motors to have EFI. (if I am correct on that research) As with any "New" technology for the first year, things can go wrong. So far I have heard nothing but good things for this bike except suspension and seat. No biggie, I am used to that.
Anyone else own a sportie this year with EFI? Any issues so far?
The bike does have SE pipe upgrade as well.
    Thanks
  2. I had an efi sportster for a little while. Really liked the little thing but sold it after finding out the cruiser riding position makes my shoulder hurt. It was great though. Low center of gravity, very easy to ride. Really made me just want to hop on a highway and go somewhere... The EFI was actually my favorite part of the bike. It started with no fuss whenever you wanted, ran flawlessly and smoothly and sounded great... I had an 883 low... It was a little underpowered for me, but comparable with all the other vintage style bikes I think... You could go test ride a newer one at almost any Harley dealer to see if you like it and then go buy that 07 you found if you do... I wouldn't hesitate to buy another efi sporty.
  3. cool man,
    thanks for the input.
Wish I lived near a harley dealer that allowed test rides.
  4. I think the 2007 XL1200R were a fine motorcycle.I don't know of any fuel injection problems from the '07 models. You get a double front disk brake too. Also the R models don't have the lowered suspension that the L models and Nightster/Iron models do.Also the R doesn't have the forward controls, but has mid controls. What all this means is that you get better cornering clearance on the R model-the lowered models, and those with forward controls, will scrape way sooner in the twisties. I have a 2006 XL883, which has mid controls and the standard suspension (like the R models), and I have yet to scrape anything in a corner. They also used to make an XL883R, and that was an excellant machine too. The C (as in Custom) models have standard suspension but forward controls (which I don't like). I once road a 2007 XL883C that the previous owner had removed the forward controls, and put the standard mid controls on, and it transformed the bike into a really nice setup in my opinion. I am happy with my 2006 carb and all. I actually wanted the carb model due to the added complexity of fuel injection and all the crap they stuff up inside the fuel tank on the FI models. But most people dissagree with me on this issue, and the FI models run really well cold or warm. I think you'd be happy with the R model Sportster. I don't consider the R models or standard XL models (or the new XR1200) to be "cruisers", as they are really just a "standard" motorcycle, just like something like the original Honda CB750K models were standards. My 2008 XL, by the way, gets about 42-60.75 miles per gallon. The low figure when riding my short 15.5 mile commute in cold weather, the higher figure when on long rides.

  5. I have an 06 1200R. I'm pretty much in agreement with Birdmove... great all around bike. I have the mid pegs/controls and forward pegs - can easily change between mid, forward and the passenger pegs during a long ride.
If I had the choice between carb or efi - I would get the efi. I get the occasional carb fart... which I think would be eliminated with the efi. I'm not a tuning expert, so other than increasing the size of the pilot jet, I haven't changed the carb's settings since it runs so well otherwise.
(I have the SE pipes and air cleaner, so it is probably a little lean just off-idle).

The 1200 Roadster's are fun to ride and versatile - can easily cruise the highway at 75-80 all day long... and much better in the curves than the custom models. Bought mine used with 1000 miles on it - I've got over 11k miles on mine now - it's been great. Seems to run stronger than ever.

  6. Best all-around bike Harley.

I love the XL1200R (and the XL1200S before it).

Hepco and Becker now make racks for hard bags if you want to tour on the thing. The efi rubber-mount Sportsters are very versatile motorcycles.

2008 was the year the Roadster got the 4.5-gallon tank. The '07 should have a 3.3-gallon tank unless the previous owner switched them out.

The bike should return MPGs in the mid-40s, so range is decent even with the 3.3-gallon tank.

The paint scheme is a nice take on the mid-60s Sportster paint. The dual disk brakes aren't too bad. Forward controls and rearsets as well as hundreds of different seats are available if you don't like the stock seating position.

  7. Gee thanks. Now I want one of those, too!
  8. Well,
took the 67 mile trip to go check it out. It is actaully a 2008. It needed a rear tire, the tank had quite a bit a swirl marks on it. Looked like someone cleaned it too much? It had fwd controls which were kind of heavy metal, dorking looking. Seat wasn;t too bad. I liked the handle bars but the position was slightly more forward than I like. It had Screaming eagle pipes which sounded really nice! The guy fired up right in the shop. He commented on how nice it is to have fuel injection.
All in all it was a nice machine, definatley ridden.
They only offered me $1,500 for my possible trade. (yep, the R90/6) The BMW does need a bit of work. But it would be ashame to let it go for so low. The guy even showing me the bike was kind of suggesting to keep the beemer.
    Hmmmm,
owning 3 bikes would be tough and expensive. I will have to think on that one. I guess sometimes when you buy a Harley you lead with your heart and your penis, but logic and practicality are second. :lol3
I mean that it the best possible way, because now I got to have one.:freaky

  9. If it matters I just got a 06 with similar mileage, originally a 883R but with a 1200 conversion, rejet, and SE pipes and the bigger sized tank for 1k less. Not EFI obviously, but maybe a source of haggling?

Similar market here in CT. I say haggle some, but it looks like a nice bike. My dealer offered a test ride pretty quick, I just had to sign some papers.

  10. yeah, the debate for me on EFI vs. carb is still on going. It would be nice to have EFI when riding in the cold, but if the EFI dies for some reason, sounds like a pain. Carb is not bad, (and cheaper) but it has its drawbacks as well.
